ZikomoSafari_2013 - webpuka

For the past eight years my friends, Victoria, David and Demian Wallace, worked and fought to obtain a 99-year lease on twenty acres of land and to build a comfortable oasis, an Eco Hotel, on this parcel of land deep in the African bush.

The land where they built is across the river from 9050 square kilometers of spectacular game reserve, South Luanga National Park.  See: http://www.zambiatourism.com/destinations/national-parks/south-luangwa-national-park

They transformed a killing ground used by Trophy Hunters to a peaceful animal playground.  See: www.zikomosafari.com

In March 2015, Victoria took the initiative to start a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation call Nsefu Wildlife Conservation Foundation (NWCF).  Its purpose is to stop poaching in the Nsefu Sector surrounding Zikomo Safari and to economically empower the local people.  The website is www.nsefu.org

I went to visit Zikomo Safari, arriving on May 17, 2013 and staying until June 4, 2013. Although I was not sure what to expect, having never been to Africa, I knew there would be many photo opportunities. I learned about the vanishing wildlife habitat, poaching, endangered species, burgeoning human population and socio-economic challenges of Africa.

Most days were spent bouncing around the bush in a game drive vehicle companion to a passionate wildlife photographer, Scott Bennion. He had expensive equipment, had been to Africa before and captured superb shots. I was amazed that the photos I got from a small Nikon point and shoot camera were also of excellent quality. I took over 5000 photos and took six weeks to sort and edit them.

Below are some of the best photos.
